Current Kitchen Project

I haven’t posted in a while and I need to get better at that. I’ve had quite a few projects going on and one of them is my kitchen. Our countertops have reached the end of their life. So I had to do something. The current countertops are made of tile that I’m pretty sure was a DIY project. To his or her credit they have lasted 40+ years. I purchased a new range and a new dishwasher. I didn’t have a dishwasher before so that will be a nice addition and will hopefully free up some time to write.

I decided to take down the tile backsplash that I hated since it makes little sense to keep it with a newer countertop. This lead to removing the soffit that I also hated and then pretty much the entire back wall. Which might seem extreme, but after you remove that much you might as well update the insulation and redo the outlet and lighting locations. Which is what I had done and that is the current state of our kitchen. We are going to remove the cabinets and countertops this weekend to have new drywall installed. The project is actually moving along quite nicely and we have been able to use our kitchen the entire time. Although it looks a bit like a construction zone.

During the demolition process I just used a bunch of plastic to cover the cabinets while I was removing the wall and cleaned up really well after each demolition session. I’m actually quite proud of how much I accomplished since I removed the entire area myself minus one 2x12 and I had a baby 5 months prior. I just took my time and removed one board at a time. The entire soffit was almost solid 2x4’s and it was still holding together very well. I don’t think a contractor would have done that today with the current lumber prices.

When coming up with what I wanted the kitchen to look like I kept being drawn to this kitchen done by Heidi Caillier. I love the rich navy and dark woods of this space so much.

I also really loved both kitchens by Athena Calderone. I particularly liked the one in her home in the Hamptons because it doesn’t have a range hood and I like the streamline look of the wall behind her range, but I loved the dark cabinets of her Brooklyn Townhouse.

Here are some other kitchens that I found really inspiring.

I’ve followed Jean for years, but this is my favorite space of hers. This is actually a butlers pantry, but I love the blue tile backsplash and the brass accents.

I recently found this one by Sean Anderson Design. He also did not install a range hood or not one that I can see.
